The souls of the port
In different historical periods the port of Taranto has had a certain commercial and strategic importance. Starting from the Magna-Greek period up to the present day, it has shown its many faces: a commercial and industrial port, a place of welcome for tourists and migrants, a film set and a setting for events.

INTERMODAL AND LOGISTICS HUB
The port of Taranto extends its quays into the bay protected by the Chéradi islands – San Pietro, San Paolo and what was originally the island of San Nicolicchio – and then immediately out of it.
It is a place in constant motion and transformation, with jetties and docks on some of which large cranes have been installed to facilitate all the port’s operations.
From the complexity of exceptional shipments to the regular standardised container transportation at the Polysectoral Quay, which has been refurbished to accommodate the latest generation of large ocean-going vessels; from quays serving large steel and fossil fuel companies, to jetties where ships carrying passengers and various goods dock.
LOADING, UNLOADING AND HANDLING
Domenico D’Erchia, Head of Security at the port company Peyrani Sud, describes the handling of goods in the port, especially wind turbines.
THE PORT AS SEEN FROM THE SEA
Gianfranco Gisonda, from the staff of the Ionian Sea Port System Authority – Port of Taranto, tells us about the port from an unusual perspective, namely from the sea, on board a catamaran.
THE EXCEPTIONAL TRANSPORT
Over the years, technological evolution and the growing competence of companies has made it possible to move thousands of tons of goods in Taranto. This also happens with increasing attention to safety, in particular to that of the people who work in the sector.
THE PORT AREA
Michele Marraffa, Founder of Marraffa Trasporti Srl and his son Giovanni, Project Manager of the same company, describe their work in port and how they faced the challenges of exceptional transport with cutting-edge vehicles.

Do you know...?
The draught of the Port of Taranto can reach a maximum depth of about -25 m, thanks to the seabed of the 4th pier, that is one of the few to be able to boast this feature!
